Bedroom Decluttering Tips for a Better Fall

From school to events to sports, fall is a busy time. So, the time to tidy is before the fall frenzy. Start the season by being well-prepared. One of the most important places to declutter is your bedroom as these rooms are our sanctuaries. A less cluttered space may lead to a better night’s sleep. Here are a dozen items likely found in your bedroom to get rid of ASAP.
Anything Under the Bed

Do you store things under your bed? Has it become a forgotten black hole of miscellany? Commit to tackling this area on the next rainy day. Whether it’s old clothing, keepsakes, or things you no longer use, it’s time to either dispose of these items, give them away, or find a more convenient storage place.

Wire Hangers

Throwing out free wire hangers can be challenging, but a large collection isn’t beneficial. A closet with various hanger types doesn’t look aesthetically pleasing. These hangers can also damage your clothing in the long run. Replace them with slim, non-slip velvet hangers.

Dry-Cleaning Garment Bags

Similarly, toss those dry cleaner bags your clothing came in. They are unsightly and can cause your clothing to yellow or have a residual odor. They also make it harder to find what you’re looking for.

Clothing You Don’t Wear

If clothing doesn’t fit, doesn’t ‘spark joy’, or is stained or worn out, it needs to go. Edit your closet. If it seems daunting, break it down. Do tops one day and bottoms the next. Give yourself a week to complete this task.

Shoes in Disrepair

Like clothing, shoes have a limited lifespan. Old shoes can cause problems. Old sneakers may not be supportive enough. Shoes with worn-out soles and heels can cause slips and injuries. If you have shoes you love but can’t wear, consider sending them to a cobbler. Uncomfortable shoes also need to go. If you have designer shoes you no longer wear, sell them on resale sites like The Real Real or Poshmark.

Old Bedding

Even high-quality bedding doesn’t last forever. Sheets with holes, pillowcases with mascara marks, or dull grey white bedding should be discarded. You can donate bed sheets or towels to a local animal shelter.

Anything in Nightstand Drawers

Nightstand drawers can become a dumping ground for various items like old books, bills, receipts, or papers. This clutter takes up space that should be for things like television remotes, books we want to read, and items like hand cream and lip balm.
When it comes to decluttering, small spaces like bedrooms can be tackled quickly.

If you’ve started a hobby that you no longer plan to continue, such as scrapbooking, it’s time to free up space in your bedroom. Store the unused supplies in a designated drawer to prepare for the new season and make room for new hobbies. Discard items that have lost their utility, like papers and stickers without adhesive.

Excess storage containers often accumulate when organizing. As you declutter, you may find that you no longer need all these containers. Instead of keeping them in your bedroom, consider storing them in an attic or basement for future use.

As winter approaches, it’s essential to deep clean your bedroom. Start by sorting out seasonal clothes not suitable for fall. Swap them with fall attire in your closet, keeping the summer clothes in a separate storage area like an attic or basement.

For those who use makeup or skincare products, it’s time to declutter old items that you no longer use. Remove products that are almost empty or have been sitting unused for a long time, especially if they are not suitable for the current season or have been replaced by other favorites.

Old socks with holes or mismatched pairs should be discarded or repurposed as cleaning rags. Don’t keep them if they’re just going to accumulate in a drawer without being used.

Professional organizers recommend tossing these five items as soon as possible to maintain a clutter-free bedroom.
